Search engine optimization, or SEO as it’s more commonly referred to, sounds scary but is really quite easy to master if you follow a few simple rules.


Let’s start with a few basics so we’re all on the same page.


What is SEO?

Search engine optimization is the art and science of creating content that’s easy for search engines to find and deliver to the right people. There are a lot of SEO techniques you can use; some quite technical in nature. Today we’ll concentrate on copy-centric strategies.

Do I really need to worry about SEO?

That depends. Do you want people to find your content? If your answer is yes, then yep, you absolutely should worry about SEO. If not, then no, you don’t—but why are you publishing online in the first place?

Remember: people love to Google

Whether your intended audience is future freshmen or established academics, there’s one thing you can count on—they’re way more likely to ask Google (or the search engine of their choice) to find the information they’re looking for than they are to come directly to your site to find it.

Why? Because it’s easier (at least it is when content is written and formatted correctly). Google has spoiled us—we’re too lazy to do our own looking these days.

Six Basic SEO tips

The entire blog has been written about SEO, so we can’t possibly cover everything you need to know here. Consider this a cheat sheet—the very least you need to know to be successful. Ready? Here we go.

1. Use keywords

Keywords are the words and phrases that define what your page is about—they’re what users would use when searching for your content. Before you begin writing, identify two or three keywords to focus on.

Use keywords:
  • In headings and subheads (h1-h6)
  • In links
  • In the content (of course)
  • If you can, include some synonyms or phrases that are similar to your keywords/phrases in your content. Using variety in the way that you write about your subject shows search engines that you are knowledgeable about your topic.

2. Write for the web

People read differently on the web. They scan rather than read your content word for word, so format it appropriately. Keep your paragraphs short and separate them with subject-oriented headings (like I’ve done here).
You can also use bullets, links, and pull quotes to help separate the text and keep users interested.

3. Write naturally

If your content sounds like it was written by a robot, search engines will think you’re just trying to draw traffic—and send you to the bottom of the results page. So focus on writing well. Good content is well-optimized content.

4. Write plainly

Avoid higher-ed speak at all costs. Remember, people tend to skim content on the web. If you use long, convoluted sentences full of big words, you will not only lose the majority of your readers, your search engine results will suffer.

5. Talk to the reader

Use person (“you can,” “you can,” “if you want more information”) rather than the third person (“the user will,” “the reader can,” “if one wants more information”).

6. Keep it focused

Your pages should be between 300 and 700 words. If you find yourself starting to write about topics not closely related to the keywords you chose, you may need to build a new page for that content.
